Your Local Car Club
Oxford saw the first shoots of OxCar in Spring 2008.
A few of us in East Oxford were keen to find a local project that was both achievable and would have a real impact on carbon emissions. Together with a few people from Transition Oxford we decided to bring a car club to our city.
And not just any old car club .... Oxcar exists to support a club with local roots and opportunities for local employment; a club that does what local residents want it to; improves mobility for those currently without access to a car; encourages responsible car use; that will facilitate a shift in the community to more fuel efficient vehicles and improve the sustainability of our city's transport network; that will improve local air quality, congestion and parking levels and will enable the design of more civic local street environments.
Since the end of 2010 we have met less frequently - the founders are each drawn to other projects... If you would like to know more, we suggest you get directly in touch with Commonwheels.
In 2011, we would very much like to find one or two keen social entrepreneurs who would like to take over the Oxford operation, in a 'social franchise' arrangement with Commonwheels - combining the best of a national operator utilising modern technology with local enthusiasts providing local knowledge and drive.

“Oxford has a wonderful new emerging culture of car clubs, local food networks and allotments, and an awareness of social sustainability and community. We feel that here and it’s great. It feels as though we are among friends, not introducing something alien.” Kevin McCloud 19 May 2011
