A project to extend community-based car club provision
Successful entry, Low Carbon Vehicle Community Challenge 2010.
One of the innovative features of Commonwheels in Oxford is the adoption of members’ existing cars by the Club. This reduces the cost of acquiring vehicles, which is one of the biggest impediments to more rapid growth, and allows the tariff charged to members to be kept at as low a rate as possible.
We are exploring how to extend this scheme effectively. Oxcar has won funding to allow us to devote more time to this over the six months from September 2010.
This is not the only way in which small organisations that are willing to experiment and innovate unconventionally can expand at less-than-usual cost. This project intends to look at such ideas, and see which are likely to be productive in the near future. Some may be useful to commercial operators, but our first concern is to support the non profit-making sector: those acting in order to benefit our communities and our environment.
