And there's more...

Commonwheels is not the only Car Club in Oxford. Oxcar has a close and productive relationship with Commonwheels but we welcome Streetcar's presence in Oxford too - competition and choice can only improve the service of all operators and of course, different people want different things.

In choosing an operator some people are driven by the availability of vehicles - bays located somewhere convenient for them and confidence that the operator provides enough cars for its membership's needs. For others costs are a factor - the two have slightly different tariffs. For others the motives and nature of the club is significant.

Oxford's two car clubs are slightly different creatures:

Streetcar is the UK’s biggest Car Club, a commercially motivated operation with more than a thousand cars in London, and a presence in nine other cities. It has recently been bought by Zipcar, a US operator with over 400,000 members.

Commonwheels is a not-for-profit ‘Community Interest company’, established to provide car clubs because of the social and environmental benefits they offer. It is a social enterprise, generating funds from its operations to cover running costs, and able to access grant-funding to support expansion and development. It will soon launch a share scheme allowing members to invest personally in supporting it.

Oxcar favours the local accountability and social and environmental motives of Commonwheels and we're really excited (but not surprised) at their success in Oxford.
